In Victoria, laws relating to the use of electric scooters

Part 15, Division 2 and part 16 of the road safety road rules 2017 set out the laws governing the use of electric scooters in Victoria.

The electric scooter must be legally ridden in Melbourne, and the rider must be at least 18 years old. The motor power output of the scooter shall not exceed 200 watts, and the maximum speed of the scooter shall not exceed 20 km / h.

In addition to power and speed limits, according to road rules, all riders must wear bicycle helmets approved by Australian standards when riding. This is to minimize injury in the event of an accident. In addition to wearing a helmet, you can choose to wear knee pads, gloves, reflective vests, etc.

If your scooter has more than one device, you may be fined 5 penalty units.

Wheeled recreational devices, including Scooters, skateboards and roller skates, cannot:

If you do not comply, you may be fined 3 penalty units.

If your electric scooter exceeds the power and speed requirements, it doesn't mean you can't use it. It just means that you can only use it in private property, not in public.

Just like any wheeled entertainment equipment and motor vehicle, you must not drive drunk while riding. If you are found drunk while riding an electric scooter, you may be fined 5 penalty units.
